stuff i use

TODO: add better images and audio samples to synthesizers, links to various listed softwares

music hardware

arturia microfreak

very fun synth that can make a lot of strange noises. i like the weird conductive keyboard a lot. very good for anything cold and digital, pretty difficult for anything that needs a "fuller" sound

microfreak
korg r3

korg r3

a nearly 20 year old synth (which definitely shows through the yellowed keys), but still sounds reeeaal good. fairly small number of built-in presets, and a good amount of menu diving for any customization, but very enjoyable to use regardless.

novation circuit tracks

groovebox with a sequencing workflow that feels significantly better than any other sequencer i've tried so far. very much capable of producing entire songs (which i've done several times), but has just enough limitations to feel like it's held back from being truly great. especially when it comes to pattern chaining and sampling

circuit tracks
jv 1080

roland jv 1080

acquired fairly recently, so haven't gotten a ton of use out of it yet. has loads of presets that sound absolutely wonderful

zoom g1x four

an affordable effects pedal that has a ton of really nice built-in effects, an expression pedal, a looper, and some low-quality drum samples. works really well with guitars and synths alike

jv 1080

misc instruments

  • roland fp10 piano
    • full sized piano with weighted keys that feels nice to play. i mostly use it as midi input into my computer or another synth. has some built-in sounds and other features locked behind a bluetooth app
  • simmons titan 50 drums
    • really nice electric drum kit i took from a sibling who didn't want it anymore. i haven't spent much time using it but it's pretty cool regardless
  • monoprice indio guitar/glarry electric bass
    • i got both of these mostly because they were cheap and i didn't know if i wanted to invest in a more expensive option at the time. there is nothing remarkable about either one, they do the trick just fine. they certainly do not stand the test of time however, as they both seem to be falling apart after ~5 years of occasional use

music software

logic pro

current DAW of choice. say what you will about apple (i could probably rant about them for hours lol), but they do certainly know how to make audio work as painless as possible. i originally used reaper on my pc, but after switching to linux and traumatizing myself from trying to get anything music-related to work on there, i bought a 5 year old macbook and it's made a world of a difference

applied acoustics strum session

random guitar plugin. has really cool simulated strumming, and sounds more like an actual guitar than any other midi guitar i've heard. very fun to play around with and get new ideas from

izotope neutron 5

just a mixing plugin. i still feel like i suck at mixing, but this plugin has a bunch of presets for various instruments in different contexts, and just adding some of those to a few different tracks makes everything sound at least 50% better imo

scaler 3

midi plugin designed around chord progressions. has a large library of pre-made progressions, and tools to design your own. i don't use it extensively, and the ui really isn't great, but it's fun to tinker around with and get ideas from

other software

vscodium

switched recently from phoenix code. a lot more effort to use out of the box, but is infinitely more customizable. got it a bit closer to where i wanted it to be thanks to this guide i found

godot

only software i've used for games. it's good!

bforartists

(also mentioned on links page) an interesting fork of blender that aims to redesign the ui to be more intuitive/accessible. i've been using this since i started learning blender a few months ago, and i'm unsure of how successful it is at achieving this, but i quite respect the vision

clay doh

(also mentioned on links page) blender addon for clay materials. really really good. used for all the texturing on the main page

copyparty

really neat little program for a local file server. got it set up as my own personal cloud after following this guide with some trial and error

aseprite

pixel art tool that's pretty good for pixel art, but also very nice for applying dithering to images or making gifs

obsidian

note taking software that made me actually start making notes for once in my life
